Keyring keeps track of your bookmarks across different environments. Because I often use different computers, or different browers on the same computer, I was having trouble keeping track of my favorite sites; if I was using Netscape and I found a site I liked, I would have to open Internet Explorer, find the site and then bookmark it. If I was using a computer at an internet cafe, I had to email myself the link, then open the email later and, again, bookmark it. I realized that there was no convenient way to always have access to the same set of bookmarks. So I made keyring, so that I could get to the same links no matter what computer or browser I was using. Hopefully you'll find this ability useful as well...
To use the site, at first, sign up with a username and password. The site will create a browsing window and a smaller bookmark window. Create bookmarks by clicking on the "add link" tab and typing the URL and name of the site you want to bookmark. You can also choose what category to create the bookmark in. Then click "add link" and the bookmark will be created.
If you want to move bookmarks or categories under another category, just check the objects you want to move and click the "move/delete" tab. Select the destination category and click "do it", and the checked object will be moved.
Adding categories is very similar to adding bookmarks; click the "add category" tab, type the name of your new category, select which category it should go under, and click "add category".
options
Right now, "options" comprises two choices. The first, "leave multiple categories open", toggles whether or not to expand more than one bookmark category at a time. The default, unchecked state keeps your list of visible bookmarks short by closing all categories except the one you have most recently opened. The second option leaves a permanent (well, 1-year-long) cookie on the machiner/browser you're using, so that you don't have to log in to keyring every time you come back. (If you click "Log out", all cookies are erased.)
uploading your bookmarks
I have only tested this function on the two browsers I have on my computer, Netscape 7.1 and Internet Explorer 6. However, I'm pretty sure that it will work for any version of those browsers. If you're running Opera, Safari etc., I don't think this will work.
If you're using the supported browsers, here's how to find your bookmarks/favorites file so that you can upload it:
Internet Explorer
* Go to file->Import and Export.
* Hit "next".
* Choose "export favorites", then "next".
* You want to export all of your favorites, so just be sure that the "Favorites" folder is highlighted and click "next" again.
* On the next screen, choose where you want to export the bookmark file to. Anywhere is okay, as long as you can find it again. (I suggest your desktop.)
* On the next screen, click "finish". If you are using my beat-up computer, a small wisp of smoke will be emitted from a side vent; otherwise, you should see an "ok" box that says "Favorites exported successfully."
* Go back to keyring and click "upload bookmarks", then click "Browse" to select the bookmark file you just made.
* Click "send file" to complete the process.
Netscape
* Netscape dirs to come. If you are reasonably savvy, you can figure this out yourself...
